The following individuals currently comprise the leadership and advisory members of the DOCS organization.

Eduardo Peña Dolhun, MD, Founder and PresidentEduardo is assistant clinical professor of Family and Community Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. He was born in Mexico City and raised in Wisconsin, obtaining his bachelor degree from Marquette University. He received his medical degree from Mayo Medical School, Rochester, MN and completed his residency training in Family Medicine at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, Jacksonville, FL. He completed three fellowships: Family Medicine Research (UCSF/ Stanford University), Faculty Development (UCSF), and Obstetrics and Gynecology (Santa Clara County/Stanford). He is co-director of Ethnicity and Medicine at Stanford University. Eduardo developed a strong interest in international primary care through his many experiences working, studying, and conducting research internationally. Eduardo has had several publications in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Dolhun founded Dolhun Clinic, a private medical practice in San Francisco. |

Jonathan Jacobs, MD, Vice PresidentJonathan has been a strong advocate universal health care access. He is founder and chair of Mid America Physicians for a National Health Program. In 2004 Jonathan joined Eduardo in the initial selection and evaluation of the first site and has been fundamental in the development of DOCS. Jonathan received his bachelor degree from Columbia University and obtained his medical degree from Mayo Medical School, Rochester, MN. He completed a dual residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at the Cleveland Clinic. Jonathan is in private practice in Kansas City, MO. and serves as Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Kansas Medical School and is Co-Medical Director of St. Lukes Hospice.

Charles Brown, Secretary and Vice PresidentCharlie directed institutional advancement for 9 years at Princeton where he developed a deep personal commitment to resource development as a way of making a positive difference in the world. He has held senior development positions at The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and Johns Hopkins University. Charlie joined Stanford University in 2000 as Director of Medical Development, and served as the Director of the Campaign for Stanford Medicine, with responsibility for strategic fundraising planning for the Stanford University School of Medicine and Stanford Hospital and Clinics. He left Stanford in February of 2004 to launch his own consulting practice, focusing on strategic interventions for nonprofit organizations in the U.S. and abroad.

Melissa RoeslerMelissa managed key partnerships and negotiations with international contract manufacturers located in Europe, Asia and Mexico for Hewlett Packard. She then transitioned to the startup environment (Netopia, Inc.) in the arena of strategic global alliances, corporate planning and forecasting. Melissa has an MBA and studied international business at the University of Natal, South Africa; University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and the University of San Diego. Melissa believes that empowering impoverished women through microcredit will lead to sustainable improvements in global health and self-sufficiency. Melissa was born and raised in South Africa and has first-hand experience with the desperate need for improved rural healthcare.

Norman Hearst, MD, MPHNorman is a Professor of Family and Community Medicine and of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. Norman has worked extensively in HIV/AIDS epidemiology and prevention in the developing world, especially Latin America. His other areas of international health experience include health sector reform and research capacity development. Norman received his medical degree at UC San Francisco and his Masters in Public Health at UC Berkeley.

Salvador Álvarez-Elcoro, MDSalvador is Associate Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Chair of the Division Of Infectious Diseases at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville, Florida. He was born in Mexico City and attended the National University of Mexico School of Medicine (UNAM) and did his residency in Internal Medicine at Tulane University in New Orleans, and his fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Boston City Hospital with Boston University School of Medicine. He was instructor of Medicine at the Peter Ben Brigham Hospital in Boston with Harvard Medical School. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. He is Chair of the International Activities Committee at Mayo Jacksonville and has been a member of the International Coordinating Committee at the Mayo Foundation for several years. He has published multiple articles on the subject of Infectious diseases and has given multiple international presentations in the areas of HIV and other infectious diseases.

Robert Bratton, MDRobert is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Family Medicine at Mayo Clinic Scottsdale, Arizona. He attended the University of Kentucky for undergraduate and medical school and did his residency training in Family Medicine at Mayo Clinic Rochester, Minnesota. He is past Director of Tele-health Services at Mayo Clinic. The program centered on providing medical care into patient's homes using computer-based technology. He has published multiple articles on the subject of telemedicine applications and has given multiple international presentations.

Matthew Hawe, TreasurerMatthew worked in Jordan for two years with the Peace Corps. His primary job was small business development, working with a Jordanian handicraft institution. Matthew is enthusiastic to continue promoting cultural understanding through DOCS by uniting his skills in business and international relations with his desire to improve the delivery of health to rural communities worldwide. Matthew has held various positions at Chiron Corporation, a leading biotech company – Strategy, Corporate Planning and his current role in Sales & Marketing. He earned his MBA from UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business and his Bachelors in Chemical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame. |

Gregory Schmidt, MDGreg received his bachelor of science from Brown University, completed his medical school training at University of California, San Francisco, and is completing his ophthalmology residency at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins Hospital. Greg finds one of the best aspects of working at Johns Hopkins is the opportunity to become involved with both the Dana Center and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public
Health. Greg developed a strong interest in international health through early experiences in Brazil and Ethiopia, and he finds Wilmer to be a great place to stay connected to ophthalmic epidemiology and public health.

Espen TuftEspen is Partner and Creative Director at Tuft+Co., a design studio working with clients in the entertainment and technology sector. Espen studied at the University of Oslo and at Kansas City Art Institute, and was prior to Tuft+Co. Art Director at Macromedia. His international background and studies have led to a strong belief in the value of cross cultural relationships and in the effort of non-profit organizations.

Student Programs
For U.S. Medical Students and Residents, DOCS will provide an opportunity to participate in a well-structured 2-4 week rotation in an international rural clinic. Medical students and residents will participate in diagnosis and treatment, educational curricula, and health research. More information on these programs will be released later this summer
